In our second concert this season we celebrate the birthday of Georg Philipp Telemann (March 14, 1681-1767), one of history’s most prolific and inventive composers. After refusing his parents wishes to become a lawyer Telemann went on to a career in music filled with fame, fortune, and equally talented friends such as George Frideric Handel and Johann Sebastian Bach. We will be playing selections from Telemann’s original party playlist Tafelmusik, along with the humorous suite Burlesque de Quixotte. We’ll highlight the connections between Telemann and his friends with our “BFF Suite,” complete with some water music by both Georges. And because no one really wants to hear a bunch of instrumentalists sing Happy Birthday, we’re ending with yet another cosmopolitan named George—Georg Muffat’s gorgeous Passacaglia from Armonico tributo.
